    The strategies below are designed for math classes, but could be used in any problem-solving setting.
    Paper Carousel -- Instructions for Students
    Step 1: Write your group members' names at the top of the paper, along with the date.
    Step 2: On your own paper, write YOUR NAME under problem #1.
    Step 3: Solve problem #1, and... (10 minute time limit)
    Step 4: Rotate papers to your right. Write YOUR NAME under problem #2. Solve problem #2. Examine problem #1 -- do you agree or disagree? Circle and initial in the space provided to indicate your answer. (13 minute time limit)
    Step 5: Rotate papers to your right. Write YOUR NAME under problem #3. Solve problem #3. Examine problems #1 and 2 -- do you agree or disagree? Circle and initial in the space provided to indicate your answer. (15 minute time limit)
    Step 6: Rotate the papers to your right. At this time, the paper should be with the original person. Examine problems #2 and 3 -- do you agree or disagree? (7 minute time limit)
    Step 7: Rotate the papers to your right. This is the second paper you worked on. Agree or disagree with problem #3. (4 minute time limit)
    Step 8: Staple the papers in order!

    Teachers can use Staple the Paper as a quick and easy assessment strategy. Teachers will want to establish the guidelines for the strategy up-front, so that students know what is expected.
    Class needs to be set up in teams (it helps if teams are established).

    There is no rule on how to write. Sometimes it comes easily and perfectly; sometimes it's like drilling rock and then blasting it out with charges. ~ Ernest Hemingway
    Here are two simple strategies to help students to think about texts and write about text. The Graffiti Strategy is an easy way to help students talk about text...without talking. This is great for those slightly chatty classes or a class full of introverts. This strategy pulls in all students to the conversation.
    The RACES writing strategy is also a basic way to help students pull in textual evidence into their writing, as well as commentary about that evidence. This strategy walks students through the writing process to guarantee success.

    This file showcases simple instructions for several quick write strategies: exit slips; written conversation; clustering; and learning logs. Writing in the content area classes doesn't have to be time intensive--let students write for 5 to 10 minutes. It will seal in their thinking.

    The questioning cubes are a great way to help students begin discussing their lesson or their text. Simply use the template below to print, cut, and create your own questioning cubes.

    Probable passage is a good way to get students to predict what the text might be about. Simply choose specific words from the piece of text students are preparing to read. Before reading, students will put the terms in the box that they think makes sense. After organizing the words, students will create a gist statement and then create three questions that they want to learn from reading the text.
