Students often struggle with academic vocabulary. In reality, as they travel from class to class and content area to content area, they are immersed in what can seem like as many as eight different foreign languages! Vocabulary strategies help students transition fluently from one class to the next.

The concept map is a great visual for students. They are able to think critically about what the term is and what it isn't. In the samples below, English I students dissected figurative language terms in cooperative learning groups. Creating the visual and examining the synonyms and properties will help students gain a greater understanding of what is expected.
